MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US sanctions are a short-sighted, dangerous line of action, fraught with the undermining of global stability, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump signed earlier on Wednesday into law a bill, overwhelmingly supported by the US Congress, that stipulates tougher sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea.

"It is regrettable that the sanctions law against Russia has been enforced in the US. The name" Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act speaks for itself: the initiators of this undertaking are trying to instill the relevant image of Russia in the minds of the American public. It is a dangerous policy, fraught with the erosion of [global] stability, for which Moscow and Washington bear a special responsibility," the ministry said in a statement.

"The American lovers of sanctions that plunged the United States into Russophobic tantrums are long overdue to get rid of illusions and to understand that no threats or attempts to exert pressure can force Russia to change its course or sacrifice its national interests," the ministry said.

"We have already demonstrated that we are not going to ignore hostile attacks, including the expulsion of our diplomats by the US authorities and the seizure of diplomatic property. Naturally, we reserve the right to other countermeasures," the ministry said.
