Earlier, US Senator Rand Paul was in a group of American lawmakers who visited Moscow in order to restore ties between the two countries. He also invited Russian MPs to Washington in a bid to start a constructive dialogue.

The senator from Kentucky is set to introduce an amendment that would lift sanctions against Russian lawmakers if Moscow eliminates its measures against US lawmakers, according to a draft version of the legislation, published by The Daily Beast.

"If the government of the Russian Federation terminates the application of sanctions with respect to all Members of the United States Senate or House of Representatives, the President shall reciprocally terminate the application of sanctions with respect to members of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation," the amendment reads.

US Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who had been sanctioned by Moscow, noted there was no need for such a legislation.

"Thanks, but no thanks… This amendment would be a capitulation to Putin's aggression," Shaheen told the outlet.

Previously, Paul claimed that he would ask President Donald Trump to lift the sanctions imposed on certain Russian officials, so they could visit the US for talks. The US senator said that senior Russian lawmakers were ready to visit Washington, noting however, that "the chairman of each of the committees is banned from coming to the US because of sanctions."
