"On March 17, 2013, an object about the size of a small boulder hit the lunar surface in Mare Imbrium," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, and then continued, "It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we've ever seen before," said Cooke.

Weighing in at 40 kilograms, at around 0.4 meters, it smashed onto the moon’s surface at 90,123 kilometers per hour. Its collision was the equivalent of 5 tons of TNT going off. No telescope was required to see this event, so anyone looking up into the night’s sky, could have seen this extraordinary strike.
