According to US mass media, on Tuesday during his State of the Union speech President Obama will focus on the global nuclear weapons reduction.
As the New York Times writes today with reference to its sources in the White House, Obama has managed to reach agreement with the US military that the American nuclear arsenal can be reduced in size by roughly a third.
Such a reduction will allow to "save a lot of money – without compromising American security in the second term,” the US President is expected to claim, according to the administration’s officials.
At the moment the US nuclear arsenal numbers 1,700 warheads, the media reminds. The strategic arms reduction treaty signed between the US and Russia in 2010 outlines a decrease in the total number of nuclear warheads to roughly 1,550 by 2018.
The media notes that after a fierce fight with the Senate’s Republicans over the 2010 treaty ratification, the new objective will certainly be met with even harder opposition. Besides, a possible new arms reduction treaty could lead to Russian demands for restrictions on American and NATO missile-defense systems in Europe, the newspaper writes.
What the US President is considering now, the media writes, is to discuss with Russia an informal agreement for mutual cuts within the framework of the existing treaty.
